I am always a bit surprised (amazed?) when one of my paintings is juried into a Society of Animal Artists show. The quality of work produced by SAA artists is top level and getting accepted into a show is very competitive. So I am surprised (amazed) to be able to say that my painting, "Prothonotary Warbler" is included in the SAA Special Show, "A Boundless World", at the Phoenix Zoo, The show opens on January 30, 2025, and runs to May 25.
We are fortunate to live in the St. Louis area, near the northern limit of several bird species, the Prothonotary Warbler being one of them. So I was able to get good reference photos of the warbler in a nearby nature reserve. Interpreting the colors and values of sun-dappled leaves as a background complimented the colors of the warbler and made for an interesting exercise in oil painting.
